The Druid's Lodge Confederacy by Paul Mathieu

The newspaper’s words must have been salt in an open wound to Pure. The truth was that the nest had been robbed. The Confederates were well and truly pre-empted in the betting.
Fallon had forecast 100–8, but when the Druid’s Lodge commissioners slipped into the Ring they were aghast to find that Queen’s Holiday had been slashed from a little early 6–1 down to 5–2. It might have been a case of extreme caution by the bookies. They were confronted with an animal that had little chance on form, but every feel of being another Druid’s Lodge ‘special’ – as indeed she was. But Purefoy’s agents saw and heard rather more than the usual quiverings of the Ring. Fallon was asked did he know the punters? whom he recalled as ‘Lord So-and-So and Mr Isaacstein, nothing better than two wealthy touts of the worst possible type.’
‘I’ve never spoken to them in my life,’ swore Jack. Bernard Dillon joined in the protestations of innocence. ‘Well, someone has,’ said the commission agent: ‘they’ve just taken £5,000 to £2,000 (£187,000 to win £470,000) besides a few other useful bets. What are we going to do?’ After a hasty conference, it was decided to make the best of a bad job. Where the interlopers had got their information could only be guessed. Fallon, though, was certain who the offender was – one of his head lads, ‘Shadow’ Bishiano, nicknamed for his thinness.
‘Shadow’ was a heavy better in the nightly games of German Banker, and not always a successful one. After a drink or two on the way back from Ascot, Jack picked up his shotgun and chased the lad all round Druid’s Lodge. Eventually, ‘Shadow’ dodged behind a clod-crushing machine. Jack loosed off. He probably only intended to scare ‘Shadow,’ but he winged him, and ‘Shadow’ limped ever after.
